When we receive zip files and can’t open them up, well I found a great utility called 7zip. This utility unzips a host of archive formats including, ZIP, TAR, GZ and its own 7z format. A great utility for creating archives with some pretty impressive compression settings. Need to create a document and don’t want to shovel out money to Microsoft, get Open Office. Open Office hosts some powerful applications if you want to create a text document, spreadsheet, presentations, diagrams and databases. The interface is similar to Microsoft Office and opens and saves multiple formats.
A great alternative to Microsoft office that is offered in multilingual and crossplatform format. The third utility is VLC Media Player an amazing video player that opens many formats. VLC is a robust open source media player that supports a wide range of video and audio formats, including OGG, MP3, MP4, MP2, DivX. A must have application especially when windows media player bugs out on you. My fourth pick is Pidgin, a robust IM client. Want to chat with friends while browsing the web or getting work done.
Your spouse uses AIM, grandma may be using MSN and your friends use yahoo messenger. Pidgin is a great application that opens multiple IM clients, even Google talk. Last pick is Windows Live Movie Maker a windows live add-in that allows you to create movies and slide shows from your photos and videos and publish to YouTube.
